This course covers the basic skills necessary to safely begin instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization (IASTM) techniques. Following a brief introduction to history, histology, and research, one will develop a foundation of IASTM, learning basic concepts and principles. An emphasis on proper instrument use for treatment of the spine, including cervical, thoracic, and lumbar, will be shown. A practical integration, including treatment of surgical scar tissue, will also be discussed. The target audience includes athletic trainers (ATs), physical therapists (PTs), occupational therapists (OTs), and personal trainers.

Chapters & learning objectives
1. The Basics of IASTM: History, Histology, and Research
In this chapter, we will review the historical origins, basic histology, and research of IASTM to support its use in the clinic. We will review basic construction characteristics in choosing IASTM tools for the spine, including treatment edges, materials, and tool shapes, and discuss the pros and cons associated with their use.
2. Lab Techniques: Cervical
In this chapter, we will review how to perform IASTM, including choosing direction of force, angle of application, treatment dosing (time), and treatment progression through superficial to deeper layers. Participants will review lab techniques applicable for treatment of the cervical spine.
3. Lab Techniques: Thoracic and Lumbar
In this chapter, participants will review lab techniques applicable for treatment of the thoracic and lumbar spine.
4. Scar Techniques, Practical Integration, and Summary
In this chapter, we will discuss treatment of surgical scars and time considerations in doing so. We will review the five steps in successful practice integration of IASTM and, in summary, discuss the clinical reasoning and rationale for IASTM.
